Park Muir Woods National Monument It’s possible, after a short walk in this national monument, to completely forget that downtown San Francisco is less than 15 miles away. This relatively small park, which is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, contains an impressive diversity of plants and animals, including an intact old-growth coast redwood forest and habitat that supports many ferns, wildflowers, small birds and mammals, and several federally listed species. Naturalist John Muir himself called the park "the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world."

Paleontologists believe that a drought may have brought numerous herd animals together near dwindling water sources, where they perished near each other, leaving behind a rich trove of fossils. Informative exhibits in the visitor center show what remains of these creatures from the Miocene epoch. Walk trails, view fossils and animal skeletons, and see Native American artifacts.

Park Devils Tower National Monument Scientists debate how Devil’s Tower was formed, but agree that about 65 million years ago, molten lava was forced into existing hard rock formations, cooling and eroding over millions of years into this striking formation that stands 1,267 feet above the landscape. The site is sacred to the Lakota people and many other Plains Tribes, and President Theodore Roosevelt declared it the nation's first national monument in 1906.

Park Craters Of The Moon National Monument & Preserve This rugged landscape features cinder cones, spatter cones and lava tube caves formed from volcanic activity in the Great Rift, a series of cracks in the Earth that runs over a stretch of 52 miles. In 1969, astronauts traveled to this region to explore its geology and learn how to identify scientifically valuable specimens for their Apollo voyage. Today, visitors can hike through unusual volcanic terrain, including the short but steep path to the top of the Inferno Cone where panoramic views can stretch as far as the Teton Range 100 miles east.
