• Park Lake Clark National Park & Preserve This vast Alaskan wilderness is close enough to Anchorage to be fairly accessible (by plane), yet its wild, stunning offerings are often overlooked. Visitors can kayak on the lake or the park’s rivers and backpack through the tundra amid spectacular mountain scenery, including two active volcanoes smoking in the distance. This park is also an excellent place to observe brown bears—professional guides specialize in trips to see them—as well as other wildlife, including caribou, moose, and a variety of birds.
• Park Manassas National Battlefield Park Spectators and reporters competed for a good view of the first major battle between Union and Confederate soldiers at Manassas in July of 1861. Before the battle, most Americans thought the war would be one short skirmish; the deaths of 900 soldiers shocked the nation into realizing otherwise. Soldiers fought a second battle over the same fields at Manassas a year later that helped clear the way for Lee’s first invasion of the North. Today, visitors can take walking tours through the primary battlegrounds. There is also a 13-mile, self-guided driving tour of that stops at various locations, including Stone House Tavern, a structure that was used as a Union field hospital.
• Report Vicksburg National Military Park Expansion NPCA has advocated for an addition to Vicksburg to the national park site for three years.
• Park Stonewall National Monument This monument represents a watershed moment in the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement, when a week-long uprising in 1969 sparked sustained determination among LGBTQ Americans to fight for full equality and civil and human rights. The Stonewall uprising was a protracted struggle in which the LGBTQ community in New York City fought back against what had become regular, city-sanctioned harassment by the police. The spontaneous six-night conflict gained national attention and inspired a new movement for full equality and acceptance. Stonewall National Monument is the first national park site dedicated to LGBTQ history.
