Park Mississippi National River & Recreation Area This national river and recreation area follows one of America's largest and most historic rivers for 72 miles through Minnesota, curving through the heart of Minneapolis-St. Paul and wandering south toward the border of Wisconsin where it meets with the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Mississippi River is home to seven national parks, but this park is the only one that was specifically created to share the history and science of the river itself. This urban oasis has a bit of everything, from canoeing and bird-watching opportunities to military relics and historic buildings, just a stone’s throw from two major metropolitan areas.

Park John Day Fossil Beds National Monument Some 54 million years ago, this entire region of Oregon lay beneath the Pacific Ocean. Within the striated rock, scientists have found fossilized evidence of more than 2,200 plants and animals and of great shifts in temperature and precipitation that may reveal clues to the planet’s climactic cycles. The park’s 14,000 acres are divided into three parts — the Clarno, Painted Hills and Sheep Rock Units — offering rugged hiking trails, spring and summer wildflowers, scenic drives, and of course, a museum of fascinating fossils to help visitors reflect on the planet’s long history.

Park Great Basin National Park The diversity of natural beauty at this park makes it a must-see destination for outdoor lovers — the hardest part is knowing where to start. Climb or take a scenic drive up Wheeler Peak, the park’s iconic 13,000-foot mountain, for spectacular views; wander through groves of 3,000-year-old bristlecone pines; take a ranger-led tour through the marble and limestone halls of Lehman Caves; and hike or backpack among pristine alpine lakes. At night, visitors can enjoy exceptionally dark skies and excellent astronomy programs.

Park Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Once touted as a scenic wonder of the world, the Delaware Water Gap is a mile-long stretch of the Middle Delaware River that slices through two mountains. The park includes the river and 67,000 pristine forested acres where visitors can enjoy hiking, camping, fishing and water sports in one of the cleanest rivers in the country.

Park Chiricahua National Monument This national monument in southern Arizona is a fantasy world of extraordinary rock sculptures created by the forces of nature over millions of years. Visitors can experience these hoodoos and other geologic wonders, enjoy mountain views, and see some of the rich animal and plant diversity in the park by exploring the eight-mile paved scenic drive and 17 miles of hiking trails, among other attractions.

Blog Post National Park Construction Projects in Jeopardy In Massachusetts, park officials barricaded a bridge leading into Lowell National Historical Park because bricks in the structure could fall on people's heads. In Washington, D.C., a bridge on the George Washington Parkway that leads to Arlington Cemetery and is used daily by thousands of people is so structurally deficient, the National Park Service could close it to heavy vehicles such as tour buses within two years if it isn't repaired.
